Malaria epidemic in Burundi

12 August 2019

The World Health Organization has reported that transmisson of malaria in Burundi is greater than expected and has reached epidemic proportions with just under 6 million cases of malaria being reported between 2 December 2018 and 21 July 2019 across the country; there have been 1801 malaria-associated deaths in the same period.

Malaria has been a major public health problem in Burundi for many years and rose significanty between 2012 (2.6 millions cases) and 2016 (8.2 millions cases). After an epidemic was declared in 2017 the resulting national intervention saw a decrease in case numbers to 7.6 million that year; a decrease which continued into 2018. The latest data indicates a significant increase in case numbers from 2018 and also highlights the ongoing high risk nature of Burundi for malaria transmission.

Advice for Travellers

At this time malaria prevention advice for Burundi is unchanged: the entire country is a high risk area and antimalarial chemoprophylaxis is advised.

The importance of following existing guidance including avoidance of mosquito bites at all times is emphasized.
