The Ugandan Ministry of Health (MoH) has reported that there has been an upsurge of malaria cases across the country. The upsurge was observed in June 2019 where a 40% increase in case numbers was observed in 2019 compared with 2018 (1.4 million cases compared with 1 million). The upsurge is associated with the rainy season and low bed net use. The MoH is responding appropriately.
At this time malaria prevention advice for Uganda is unchanged: the entire country is a high risk area and antimalarial chemoprophylaxis is advised.
The importance of following existing guidance including avoidance of mosquito bites at all times is emphasized.
