There has been an increase in the number of cases of eastern equine encephalitis (EEE) in the USA in 2019. From the start of the summer transmission season to 1 October 2019 there have been about 30 cases including 10 deaths in 4 states: Connecticut (3 deaths)
, Massachussetts (3 deaths), Michigan (3 deaths) and Rhode Island (1 death).
EEE is caused by an alphavirus transmitted by mosquito bite, mainly in the eastern United States. It is an uncommon infection but some years see increased case numbers. About 1 in 3 people who have EEE will die. There is no cure for the infection and only supportive treatment is available.
Travellers to endemic regions who may be engaging in outdoor work or recreational activity should practice rigorous insect bite avoidanceat all times to reduce the risk of mosquito-borne infection.
