On 23 September 2020, the Global Polio Eradication Initiative reported three cases of polio (cVDPV2) in South Sudan; one case in Warrap province and two cases in the Western Bahr El Ghazal province. These are the first cVDPV2 cases in the country and they are linked to the ongoing outbreak in Chad.
Poliomyelitis is spread mainly through person to person contact via the faecal-oral route.
Travellers should be offered a booster of poliomyelitis vaccine if it has been more than 10 years since their last dose.
