Polio in Algeria (Tamanghasset)

The Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) has reported a case of polio in Tamanghasset, Algeria in the week ending 15 July 2022. Tamanghasset is in the far south of Algeria, about 400km from the borders with Mali and Niger.

The case is linked to polio circulating in Zamfara, Nigeria.

Advice for Travellers

Poliomyelitis is spread mainly through person to person contact via the faecal-oral route.

  • Travellers should be offered a booster dose of poliomyelitis vaccine if it has been more than 10 years since their last dose.
