Dengue fever in Bangladesh

03 August 2022

Media reports advise Bangladesh Directorate General of Health Services reported 1571 cases of dengue fever, including 9 deaths across the country in July 2022, compared to 737 cases of dengue fever and 1 death in June 2022. About two thirds of dengue cases in Bangladesh in July were reported from Cox’s Bazar district.

According to the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), this recent upsurge in dengue transmission in the Cox's Bazar district exceeds seasonal trends. In Bangladesh case numbers increase significantly after June usually peaking in August to September before declining to low numbers in January: being associated with the rainy season.

Dengue fever is an infection found in tropical and sub-tropical climates worldwide. It is spread by Aedes mosquito bites and can cause a severe flu-like illness.

There is no vaccine against dengue licensed in the UK. Treatment is supportive only.

Advice for Travellers

All travellers to endemic regions are potentially at risk of dengue fever and should be aware of this infection. Aedes mosquitoes are particularly persistent and aggressive. They bite between dawn and dusk.

Travellers developing a fever during or on return from travel are advised to seek medical attention as soon as possible.
