Malaria in Peru - increased risk

The Peruvian Ministry of Health has reported a widespread increase in malaria case numbers in 2022.

Malaria cases have been reported in the regions of Loreto, Junín, Amazonas, Cusco, San Martín, Ayacucho, Ucayali, Cajamarca, Lima and La Libertad.

Loreto region and Satipo Province (eastern Junin Region) are currently high malaria risk areas.

While higher than expected cases of malaria continue to be reported, all travellers to Peru should:

If visiting Loreto region or Satipo Province (eastern Junin region):

  • travellers are advised to take antimalarial chemoproprophylaxis - see malaria text on Peru country page.

If visiting Amazonas region or western Ayacucho region:

Travellers returning from malarious areas should seek prompt medical advice if they develop a fever during travel or on their return, ensuring they highlight their potential exposure to malaria.
