Malaria in Mexico (Oaxaca)

05 January 2023

Health authorities in Mexico report a small outbreak of malaria in the state of Oaxaca, beginning in December 2022. Twenty-eight cases of malaria have been reported in the town of San Pedro Tapanatepec. This is the first outbreak of malaria in Oaxaca in the past ten years and is considered to be under control at this time.

Advice for Travellers

Malaria is currently rare in Mexico and the risk is generally very low. However, travellers to Mexico should:

  • be made aware of the risk of malaria, given the current increase in cases.
  • practice strict mosquito bite avoidance, the mainstay of prevention of malaria and other mosquito-borne infections.

Travellers returning from malarious areas should seek prompt medical advice if they develop a fever during travel or on their return home, ensuring they highlight their potential exposure to malaria.

See the Malaria Prevention section of the TRAVAX Mexico page and the TRAVAX Malaria section for further information.
