Malaria cases in Kayin State, eastern Myanmar have increased by more than 1,000% since 2020. In 2022, there were 32,000 cases in the state.
In January 2023 there were 4,510 cases, which suggests this year may see further increases. Drug resistant Plasmodium falciparum malaria is found in this part of Myanmar, which borders Thailand.
While higher than expected cases of malaria continue to be reported, all travellers to Kayin State should:
Antimalarial chemoprophylaxis is advised for travellers to Kayin State – atovaquone-proguanil or doxycycline is recommended.
Travellers returning from malarious areas should seek prompt medical advice if they develop a fever during travel or on their return, ensuring they highlight their potential exposure to malaria.
