Media quoting the Sudanese Ministry of Health and the United Nations report a continuing malaria outbreak in Sudan. Khartoum and Toker are among the areas reporting increased malaria. Malaria case numbers are expected to continue rising in Sudan and this is likely to be made worse by the current conflict situation.
All travellers to Sudan should:
Due to reported increases in malaria cases and the impact of current civil unrest on health services, antimalarial chemoprophylaxis is now advised for all travellers to Sudan, including Khartoum; atovaquone-proguanil or doxycycline or mefloquine is recommended.
This change will remain in place for 6 months then be reviewed.
Anyone returning from Sudan should be vigilant for the signs of malaria and seek immediate medical attention if they have a fever or flu-like illness.
