Dengue in Peru

05 June 2023

According to the country’s Ministry of Health, Peru continues to experience a major outbreak of dengue, with 64 105 cases (including 62 deaths) across the country between 1 January 2023 and 30 April 2023. Piura, Loreto, Ucayali, Ica, Lima and San Martin are the departments most affected.

Dengue fever is an infection found in tropical and subtropical climates worldwide. It is spread by Aedes mosquito bites and can cause a severe flu-like illness.

A new dengue vaccine Qdenga® has been licensed in the UK but is not yet available for use. Treatment for dengue is supportive only.

Advice for Travellers

All travellers to endemic regions are potentially at risk of dengue fever and should be aware of this infection. Aedes mosquitoes are particularly persistent and aggressive. They bite between dawn and dusk.

Travellers developing a fever during or on return from travel are advised to seek medical attention as soon as possible.
