Typhoid in Fiji - Northern Division

According to the Pacific Community, an outbreak of typhoid continues in Fiji. As of 22 June 2023, there have been 32 cases in the Northern Division. The affected Subdivisions are Macuata (18 cases), Bua (11 cases) and Cakaudrove (3 cases).

Typhoid is an illness caused by infection with the bacteria Salmonella Typhi. It is spread by consuming food and drink that has been contaminated with infected human faeces or urine (faecal-oral route). 

Advice to travellers

As with all illnesses spread by the faecal-oral route, travellers are advised that the following food and water precautions should be taken:

  • Avoid consumption of potentially contaminated drinks.
  • Ensure food is uncontaminated and cooked thoroughly.
  • Ensure personal hygiene when eating and drinking; hand washing prior to eating and using clean plates, cups and utensils.
