Polio in Tanzania

On 19 July 2023, the Global Polio Eradication Initiative reported one case of polio from Rukwa region of Tanzania, making it the first of this strain of polio virus in the country. The case developed symptoms with onset of paralysis on 26 May 2023.

Advice for Travellers

Poliomyelitis is spread mainly through person to person contact via the faecal-oral route.

• All travellers should take care with personal and food and water hygiene.
• Travellers should be offered a booster dose of poliomyelitis vaccine if it has been more than 10 years since their last dose.
