Polio in Guinea

21 August 2023

On 16 August 2023, the Global Polio Eradication Initiative reported one case of polio from Kankan region of Guinea, making it the first case since 2021. The case is linked to an ongoing outbreak in Nigeria.

Advice for Travellers

Poliomyelitis is spread mainly through person to person contact via the faecal-oral route.

  • All travellers should take care with personal and food and water hygiene.
  • Travellers should be offered a booster dose of polio vaccine if it has been more than 10 years since their last dose.
