Dengue in France

12 July 2024

On 8 July 2024, Occitania’s Regional Health Agency (ARS) reported (in French) a locally acquired case of dengue fever. The case was from the Hérault department of Occitania region in France and had no travel history. Local authorities have implemented vector control measures around the areas of Montpellier and Perols which were frequented by the case.

This is the first case of locally-acquired dengue reported in France in 2024. In 2023, France reported 45 cases of locally acquired dengue across 7 regions. Of those cases, 22 were reported from Occitania region.

Dengue is an infection found in tropical and sub-tropical climates worldwide. It is spread by Aedes mosquito bites and can cause a severe flu-like illness.

Advice for Travellers

All travellers to affected regions are potentially at risk of dengue fever and should be aware of this infection.

Aedes mosquitoes are particularly persistent and aggressive. They bite between dawn and dusk.

A new dengue vaccine Qdenga® has been licensed in the UK.

Treatment for dengue is supportive only.
