Legionellosis (legionnaire's disease) in Italy: Milan area

12 August 2024

The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control ECDC reports an ongoing outbreak of legionellosis (legionnaire's disease) in the Milan area. From 11 April 2024 to 8 August 2024, there have been 49 confirmed cases of Legionnaires' disease, including 3 deaths.

Forty-four cases have been recorded in the municipality of Corsico and 5 from the municipality of Buccinasco, both of which are in the Milan area.

Legionnaires' disease is spread by inhalation of Legionella bacteria in water spray or aerosols. Outbreaks have been linked to heating or cooling systems, hot tubs, fountains and swimming pools

Risk of infection is greatest for smokers, the elderly, people with a chronic lung condition and those with a weakened immune system. There is no vaccine against Legionnaires' disease.

Advice to travellers

Travellers to the Milan area should be made aware of the current outbreak, how the infection is transmitted and the symptoms of infection.

  • Showers in accommodation that have not been recently used should be flushed through with hot water before first use.
  • Travellers should seek prompt medical advice if they develop an influenza-like illness with fever, cough or shortness of breath during their stay or for up to two weeks after return. They should inform the healthcare professional they may have been exposed to Legionnaires' disease and mention the area they have visited.

For EU/EEA countries, travellers can check the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) list of accommodations to see where Legionnaires' disease clusters have recently been reported.

For further information on the disease, see the Legionellosis page.
