Malaria in India: Mizoram state

16 August 2024

Media quoting the National Vector Borne Disease Control Programme have reported over 12,290 malaria cases (including 5 deaths) in the northeastern state of Mizoram between January 2024 and July 2024. Most malaria cases have been reported from Lawngtlai, Lunglei, Mamit and Siaha districts. All of the deaths occurred in Lawngtlai.

 Advice for Travellers

All travellers to Mizoram should:

  • be made aware of the risk of malaria, given the current increase in cases
  • practice strict mosquito bite avoidance at all times of the day, the mainstay of malaria prevention. These measures will also help prevent dengue and chikungunya which are also present in Mizoram.

Due to the high risk of malaria, antimalarial chemoprophylaxis is advised for all travellers to Mizoram; atovaquone-proguanil or doxycycline or mefloquine is recommended.

After Travel

Travellers should be advised that if they become unwell in the weeks/months after travel, particularly with a fever and/or flu-like symptoms, they should always seek prompt medical advice and ensure they mention their travel history to the health professional, particularly if they have travelled to a region where malaria is a risk.
