Dengue in South East Asia and the Western Pacific (Update 1)

The World Health Organization (WHO) reports continued transmission of dengue in South East Asia and the Western Pacific. The following countries have reported cases between 1 January 2024 and late August 2024:

Australia: 1,557 cases

Bangladesh: 9,562 cases (74 deaths)

Cambodia: 9,755 cases (30 deaths)

China: 404 cases

India: 13,044 cases in Kerala and 21,186 cases in Karnataka. The Indian Government reports dengue in nearly all states.

Indonesia: 373,528 cases

Laos: 10,376 cases

Malaysia: 90,533 cases (80 deaths)

Maldives: 2,675 cases

Nepal: 2,645 cases

New Caledonia: 8 cases

Philippines: 136,161 cases (364 deaths) according to media quoting the Department of Health

Singapore: 10,913 cases

Sri Lanka: 34,153 cases

Thailand: 62,487 cases (49 deaths)

Vietnam: 57,858 cases (9 deaths)

Pacific Island countries reporting "dengue-like illness" in 2024 include:

• Fiji
• French Polynesia
• Federated States of Micronesia
• Kiribati
• Northern Marianas
• Palau
• Samoa
• Solomon Islands
• Tokelau
• Vanuatu
• Wallis & Futuna

Advice for Travellers

All travellers to affected regions are potentially at risk of dengue fever and should be aware of this infection.

Aedes mosquitoes are particularly persistent and aggressive. They bite between dawn and dusk.

• Prevention relies on avoiding mosquito bites at all times.

A new dengue vaccine Qdenga® has been licensed in the UK.

• Guidance on the recommended use of Qdenga® vaccine is currently being drafted for the Green Book, but is not yet available.
