The World Health Organization is investigating an outbreak of an unidentified illness in Kwanzi Province, Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).
From 24 October 2024 to 5 December 2024, Panzi Health Zone in Kwango Province has reported 406 cases (31 deaths) of the disease. Symptoms include fever, headache, cough, runny nose and body ache. Most cases and deaths are children aged under 15 years.
Investigations into the cause of the illness are continuing.
Travellers to DRC should at all times take general health precautions.
All travellers should ensure they have a valid comprehensive travel insurance, and check the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office travel advice for DRC.
Travellers to DRC should ensure they are up to date with UK schedule vaccines as well as any vaccines and antimalarials advised for travel to DRC.
Travellers should be advised not travel if they are already unwell, as they risk infecting others, and also increase their risk of coming into contact with sick people if they need to visit a medical facility during travel.
Food and water hygiene precations and regular handwashing are essential at all times.
Travellers should be advised to practice respiratory hygiene measures, and avoid contact with other people who appear unwell.
DRC is a high-risk country for malaria and other vector-borne infections. Travellers should take precautions to avoid malaria at all times. This includes taking antimalarial medication and avoiding insect bites.
Travellers should be advised to seek immediate medical advice if they become unwell during and/or after travel to DRC, and to always mention their travel history.
