African Trypanosomiasis in Angola

11 July 2011

A total of 76 cases of trypanosomiasis (sleeping sickness) were recorded in the first six months of 2011, in the 6 endemic provinces of the country; Malanje, Uije, Kwanza Norte, Kwanza Sul, Bengo, and Zaire. These cases were detected during epidemiological screening. A campaign is underway, fumigating and spraying areas affected or infested by the tsetse fly.

Advice for Travellers

Travellers to endemic areas should avoid being bitten by the tsetse fly. Covering skin with clothing, using repellent on exposed skin and sleeping under a mosquito net is recommended.
