A total of 37 confirmed cases of tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) have been recorded this far in 2011, this compares with 20 in the same time period of 2010. It is unclear if this increase is due to climate changes, a change in tick activity or a decline in vaccination acceptance/adherence to vaccination recommendations (in Austria some 88% of the population received (partial) vaccination). In Austria, transmission has occured countrywide in regions up to 1560 meters.
Advice for Travellers
Immunisation against TBE is available for those considered to be at risk. From spring to late summer, travellers visiting rural forested, parkland areas etc, should also prevent tick bites.
