Measles in Kenya

18 July 2011

UNICEF reports that more than 17 584 measles cases and 114 resulting deaths, have been recorded countrywide in the first six months of the year (2011) in Ethiopia. WHO has also reported that at least 462 cases of measles, including 11 deaths, have been confirmed in recent months among Somali refugee children in the complex of Dadaab in Kenya. The movement of people and poor sanitation in overcrowded camps and towns due to the drought and violence in East Africa increases the risk of cholera, typhoid and measles epidemics.

Advice for Travellers

Individuals travelling to affected areas in the capacity of relief/aid work should be immunised against measles and cholera.
