20 July 2011

Public health officials for Leningrad Oblast have announced 39 cases of Lyme disease. Overall 5068 people have sought medical advice after tick bites. Tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) vaccine has been administered to 18 235 individuals, including 4941 children.

Advice for Travellers

From spring to late summer, travellers visiting rural forested, parkland areas etc, should prevent tick bites by covering up with clothing and using insect repellent on the skin. Immunisation against TBE is available for those considered to be at risk when visiting endemic areas of Russia.
