Eastern Equine Encephalitis (Human) in US

15 August 2011

The Oswego County Health Department (state of New York) confirmed on 12 August 2011 that a child has contracted eastern equine encephalitis (EEE) virus. This is the first human case detected in 2011. Mosquito pools have tested positive in the following areas of Oswego County: town of Albion, West Monroe's Toad Harbor Big Bay Swamp; the townships of Palermo, Volney, and Hastings; and the village of Central Square.

Advice for Travellers

EEE is spread by the bite of an infected mosquito, therefore avoidance of mosquito bites by covering up, using insect repellent and impregnated bed nets is essential.
