Measles in Australia

22 August 2011

The Communicable Diseases and Immunisation Manager for the Western Sydney health district said there were more measles cases in Blacktown this year than for the past 8 years. There had been 22 measles cases reported from 2002 to 2010 in the western Sydney region and 26 this year alone in Blacktown. Most of these were from Mt Druitt and more than half involved children and young adults.

Advice for Travellers

It should be confirmed that children have received their recommended doses of MMR at 12-15 months of age and again pre-school around 3 years 6 months, while unimmunised adults who have not had the disease themselves may consider vaccination if thought to be at risk. Two doses of MMR vaccine are required to give adequate protection.
