Measles in New Zealand (Update 3)

22 August 2011

The Auckland Regional Public Health Service has confirmed 108 cases of measles in the Auckland region as of Mon 15 Aug 2011. Three contacts are in quarantine and 7 cases have required hospitalisation during this outbreak. Most cases have occurred in West Auckland with some spread to Central Auckland, North Shore and Manukau.

Advice for Travellers

It should be confirmed that children have received their recommended doses of MMR at 12-15 months of age and again pre-school around 3 years 6 months, while unimmunised adults who have not had the disease themselves may consider vaccination if thought to be at risk. Two doses of MMR vaccine are required to give adequate protection.
