An outbreak of hepatitis A has been reported by the Regional Health Inspectorate. In August 2011, a total of 144 cases were registered in the city of Plovdiv in the south of Bulgaria. Thirty four cases were identified among the Roma population in the slum quarters of Stolipinovo. However, epidemiologists report that the cases in this outbreak are not epidemiologically linked. The source of infection has not been identified but steps are being taken to improve sanitation in the affected areas.
Advice for Travellers
Hepatitis A vaccination is usually recommended for travellers to Bulgaria. Travellers should also maintain a good standard of food, water and personal hygiene.
