An outbreak of hepatitis A has been reported from Estonia in northern Europe. As of 12 September 2011, a total of 29 confirmed cases have been recorded in Viljandi Country in southern, central Estonia.
The primary case was confirmed in February 2011, and was associated with travel abroad. Since August 2011, the number of cases has increased to 28 across the county, 25 of those were identified in the town of Viljandi.
Hepatitis A infection is uncommon in Estonia, with only 6 cases recorded in 2010. The last major outbreak was in Someru in 1993, when contaminated drinking water was responsible for 614 cases.
Advice for Travellers
Hepatitis A vaccine is recommended for selective use for travellers to Estonia. Those visiting affected areas should be immunised. A good standard of food, water and personal hygiene is also recommeded.
