Rabies (canine and human) in Zambia

An outbreak of animal rabies has been reported from Mansa district, Luapula province in the north west of Zambia.

Fourteen animal cases were recorded recently in Mansa district andĀ one human death from rabies infection was reported from theĀ Chembe area. The individual who died had been bitten by a rabid dog.

The department of livestock has initiated a vaccination campaign that aims to cover around 500 dogs in Mansa district.

Advice for Travellers

Zambia is considered to be a high risk country for rabies and travellers should be made aware and advised to avoid all contact with animals. Rabies pre-exposure vaccine should be considered for those at risk. All bites should be reported and assessed carefully.
