Chikungunya Virus in Indonesia

24 October 2011

An outbreak of chikungunya virus infection has been reported from Ambawang district and districts A and B in Central Java province. At least 94 cases have been identified and many more cases are predicted. Fogging of homes in the two affected villages has taken place to help eliminate the vector of chikungunya i.e. Aedes aegypti mosquitoes.

Advice for Travellers

The only preventive measure against chikungunya virus infection is to avoid being bitten by mosquitoes. Travellers should be advised to use clothing to protect the skin from bites, use repellent on exposed skin and sleep under an impregnated mosquito net if accommodation is not airconditioned.
