Measles in Ecuador

24 October 2011

The health minister for Ecuador has reported an outbreak of measles in Tungurahua province in the central Andean region. A total of 99 confirmed cases have been recorded, as of 16 October 2011. Most of the cases have been under 5 years-of-age and a national immunisation campaign has been launched in order to contain the outbreak.

The index case was infected by an African genotype of measles virus in September 2011, and belonged to the indigenous community of Chico Illahua, 120 km south of Quito.

Advice for Travellers

It should be confirmed that children have received their recommended doses of MMR at 12-15 months of age and again pre-school around 3 years 6 months, while unimmunised adults who have not had the disease themselves may consider vaccination if thought to be at risk. Two doses of MMR vaccine are required to give adequate protection.
