On Sunday 23 October 2011, an earthquake on 7.3 magnitude hit the city of Van in eastern Turkey. Officials at the seismological institute in Istanbul estimate that between 500 - 1000 individuals may be buried beneath the rubble. This is the worst earthquake to affect the country in years. At least 50 people have been taken to hospital and severe damage to buildings is reported. The army has sent search and rescue teams to the area.

Advice for Travellers
This area of Turkey is not a popular tourist destination. The city airport has been affected by the earthquake but it has not disrupted air traffic. Those intending to visit Turkey should check with their tour operator before travelling and check with the FCO for the latest information.
