Pertussis in New Zealand

31 October 2011

A pertussis outbreak has been reported in Nelson and Marlborough in the far north of South Island. The health authorities are concerned that this and similar outbreaks in West Coast and Hawke's Bay, may develop into a nationwide epidemic similar to that during 2004-2005. In September 2011, Nelson had 40 cases of pertussis.

Advice for Travellers

It should be confirmed that children have received their recommended doses of pertussis vaccine in accordance with the UK schedule. There is no pertussis vaccine available for adults in the UK.
