Typhoid Fever in Philippines

An outbreak of typhoid fever has been reprted from Cebu province. Around 558 cases and 4 deaths have been reported from eight communities of Taburan town in Cebu.

An official from the Department of Health warned that more typhoid cases should be expected, particularly after tests indicated that water in the area tested positive for faecal contamination.

The regional director has advised local government units to regularly and assiduously check their water system.

Advice for Travellers

Typhoid vaccine is usually recommended for those visiting the Philippines. Precautions with food and water hygiene is also recommended as the vaccine is not fully effective in protecting against typhoid fever.
