Avian Influenza (Human) in Indonesia

The Ministry of Health of Indonesia has notified WHO of a new case of human infection with avian influenza A(H5N1) virus. The case is a 17-year-old male from Nusa Tenggara Barat province (eastern Lombok island). He became unwell after coming into contact with sick chickens. He developed fever on 28 Feb 2012 and sought treatment on 1 Mar 2012. His condition deteriorated, and he was admitted to a referral hospital, but died on 9 Mar 2012.
To date, of the 188 cases reported in Indonesia since 2005, 156 have been fatal
