Rabies (Canine) in Bolivia

02 April 2012

Departmental Health Services of Santa Cruz department in Central Bolivia have reported 30 positive canine rabies cases so far in 2012. Of those, 19 cases were identified in rural locations and 11 in urban areas.

An immunisation campaign is planned and aims to vaccinate around 500 000 dogs in the region.

Advice for Travellers

Bolivia is considered to be a high risk country for rabies and travellers should be made aware and advised to avoid all contact with animals. Rabies pre-exposure vaccine should be considered for those at risk. All bites should be reported and assessed carefully.
