Cholera in Ghana (Update)

13 June 2012

More than 4000 cholera cases and 64 related deaths have been recorded nationwide following the cholera outbreak that began in the country during the first quarter of the year (2012).

The Accra metropolis is the worst affected area with 2756 cases and 31 deaths reported. Currently health officials in Accra have reported a significant decline in the number of new cholera cases but say with the onset of the rains, there is a possiblity of fresh outbreaks unless residents continue to adhere to strict personal and environmental hygienic practices.

The outbreak is said to have been a result of poor hygiene coupled with perennial flooding and the sale of contaminated food in the capital.

Advice for Travellers

Travellers to outbreak areas who will be mixing closely with the local population and cannot ensure safe drinking water can be immunised against cholera. A high standard of food, water and personal hygiene should also be maintained.
