Cholera in Cuba (Update)

18 July 2012

The number of cholera cases in the current outbreak in Granma province is increasing. Officials reported 12 new confirmed cases bring the total number to 170 with a further 8 new suspected cases.

The number of cases varies relating to the source of the information. The lead epidemiologist for Granma has reported 170 cases within the province and states that cholera has been reported from 9 of the 13 provincial municipalities. The Public Health Ministry for Cuba has reported 158 cholera cases and did confirm that a few isolated cases have been reported outwith Granma province however, the cases did have a history of travel to the outbreak area.

Advice for Travellers

Cholera risk outwith the outbreak area is negligible for travellers. Travellers to outbreak areas should discuss their risk with a healthcare professional who can advise on the possible use of the vaccine. Travellers to outbreak areas who will be mixing closely with the local population, and cannot ensure safe drinking water, can be immunised against cholera.

All travellers should practise strict food and water hygiene and wash their hands frequently, especially before eating.
