Cholera in Cuba (Update)

26 August 2013

Surveillance of cholera has been ongoing in Cuba since the outbreak reported in 2012. As a result, cholera cases have been confirmed during 2013, in the provinces of Havana, Santiago de Cuba and Camaguey, as well as in other municipalities where cases were linked to these three provinces.

The cases reported in Havana were linked to two food outlets where asymptomatic food handlers were working. These establishments have since implemented appropriate sanitary measures.

Among the confirmed cases were 12 tourists from various countries: Chile (2), Germany (2), Italy (3), Netherlands (1), Spain (2) and Venezuela (2). All have since recovered.

Advice for Travellers

Cholera is a low risk for the average traveller to Cuba, however a good standard of food and water safety and personal hygiene should be maintained.

Travellers to outbreak areas who will be mixing closely with the local population and cannot ensure safe drinking water can be immunised against cholera.
