Cholera in Nigeria

21 October 2013

An outbreak of cholera has been reported from Namu village in the Qua'pan Local Government Area of Plateau state in central Nigeria. Sixty one cholera cases have required hospital treatment and 8 cases have died as a result of cholera.

Namu village is located at the Plateau and Nasarawa States border, and hosts displaced persons resulting from a crisis situation in the Obi Local Government Area of Nasarawa State.

A state health official attributed the outbreak to overcrowding, dirty environment and the consumption of unhygienic food and water.

Advice from Travellers

Travellers to outbreak areas who will be mixing closely with the local population and cannot ensure safe drinking water can be immunised against cholera. A high standard of food, water and personal hygiene should also be maintained.
