The National Health and Family Planning Commission of China has reported a new case of human infection with avian influenza A(H7N9) virus.
The new case, identified in Zhejiang Province in the east of the country is the 5th case to be reported this autumn and the 3rd in November 2013. The case is a 78-year-old man from Anji County who is said to be in a critical condition in hospital.
To date, WHO has been informed of a total of 139 laboratory-confirmed human cases with avian influenza A(H7N9) virus infection including 45 deaths.
Advice for Travellers
Avian influenza virus (H7N9) infection is unusual in humans but appears to cause severe illness in those infected. Preventive measures are the same as those for highly pathogenic avian influenza virus (H5N1).
