New cases of human infection with avian influenza A(H7N9) virus continue to be reported in China.
The two most recent cases include a 51-year-old woman from the city of Foshan in the south of Guangdong province; the province has recorded 10 cases since August 2013. The second case is a 54-year-old woman from Nanjing in Jiangsu province, eastern China. Both cases are receiving hospital treatment.
To date, a total of 149 laboratory-confirmed human cases of avian influenza A(H7N9) virus infection have been recorded in mainland China. The provinces reporting the highest number of cases include Zhejiang with 52, Shanghai with 34 and Jiangsu 28.
Advice for Travellers
Avian influenza virus (H7N9) infection is unusual in humans but appears to cause severe illness in those infected. Preventive measures are the same as those for highly pathogenic avian influenza virus (H5N1).
