09 December 2013

In Haiti, since the beginning of the cholera epidemic (October 2010) and until epidemiological week (EW) 47 of 2013, there have been 692 098 cholera cases, of which 386 652 were hospitalized (55.9%) and 8470 died. The cumulative case-fatality rate remains 1.2 percent, with variations ranging from 4.%, in the department of Sud Est to 0.6%, in Port-au-Prince.

There has been an increasing trend noted in the past 4 weeks, coinciding with the rainy season and similar to the previous year. The weekly average recorded to date in 2013 is lower than recorded in 2012 (1945 cases and 18 deaths).

Advice for Travellers

Travellers to outbreak areas who will be mixing closely with the local population and cannot ensure safe drinking water can be immunised against cholera. A high standard of food, water and personal hygiene should also be maintained.
