Canine rabies continues to be reported in Bali despite two years of a joint vaccination initiative by the Health Agency for Bali and the Indonesian government. The target date set for rabies eradication is 2015, however, during November 2013, 30 cases of canine rabies were reported in 7 out of 9 regencies of the island. The regencies reporting canine rabies include: Badung, Bangli, Buleleng, Gianyar, Jembrana, Karangasem and Klungklung.
In December 2013, the media reported on a human death from rabies virus infection on Bali in September 2013.
Advice for Travellers
The rabies situation has improved in Bali but travellers should be aware of the ongoing risk and avoid animal contact and report any bites. Pre-exposure vaccination should be considered for those at increased risk.
