A fatal human case of rabies virus infection has been reported from Bali, Indonesia.
The case was a 37-year-old builder from Singaraja in the north of the island who was bitten on the hand whilst playing with a puppy on the building site where he worked. The bite occurred on 17 December 2013, it was not reported and post-exposure prophylaxis therefore could not be administered. The man developed symptoms and sought medical attention on 1 January 2014, he was admitted to hospital where unfortunately he died from rabies two days later.
Advice for Travellers
The rabies situation has improved in Bali but travellers should be aware of the ongoing risk and avoid animal contact and report any bites. Pre-exposure vaccination should be considered for those at increased risk.
