Yellow Fever in Angola (Update)

04 October 2016

On the 16 September 2016 the World Health Organisation reported 4 new laboratory positive Yellow Fever (YF) cases in Angola. However, in the WHO latest situation report of 30 September 2016Link it was confirmed that the 4 laboratory positive cases reported on the 16 September had a history of yellow fever vaccination and were therefore ruled out as being new YF cases.

Consequently the outbreak in Angola continues not to constitute a Public Health Emergency of International Concern but remains a serious public health event.

Mass reactive YF vaccination campaigns in Angola have been implemented in all areas with confirmed local transmission.

Advice for Travellers

Yellow fever infection can easily be prevented by vaccination. Vaccination is advised for all travellers to Angola (unless contraindicated) and proof of vaccination is required for all travellers over 9 months of age entering Angola. The vaccine should be administered at least 10 days before travelling and Angola considers the International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis (ICVP) to be valid for life.

It is essential that travellers also take steps to avoid mosquito bites.
