On 9 August 2017 the Global Polio Eradication Initiative reported 3 new cases of circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus type 2 (cVDPV2) in Syria. Onset of paralysis in these 3 cases was between 3 March and 16 June.
The case total in the current outbreak to 30. Of these, 29 cases were in Mayadeen district, Deir Ez-Zour governorate, and 1 case in Talabyad district, Raqqa governorate.
Syria is classified by the WHO as a polio infected country.
