A surge in new cholera cases has been reported from Haiti following weeks of heavy rains, the number of cases spiked to 1700 a day by the middle of June 2011. While the number of new cases has eased somewhat, the Health Ministry says clinics still are getting about 1000 new cases daily. To date there have been at least 370 000 cholera cases and 5500 deaths recorded since the outbreak began.
Advice for Travellers
Travellers to outbreak areas who will be mixing closely with the local population and cannot ensure safe drinking water can be immunised against cholera. A high standard of food, water and personal hygiene should also be maintained.
