The cholera outbreak that was first reported from Haiti in October 2010, remains ongoing. The WHO predicts that if trends continue, around 75 000 more cholera cases will be recorded before the end of 2011; this would mean a total of 500 000 cases. As of October 2011, WHO has been notified of 470 000 cholera cases in Haiti. Notification of new cholera cases was greatly reduced in August, however now that the rainy season has begun the situation is worsening once again.
Advice for Travellers
Travellers to outbreak areas who will be mixing closely with the local population and cannot ensure safe drinking water can be immunised against cholera. A high standard of food, water and personal hygiene should also be maintained.
