Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease in Vietnam (Update 2)

12 September 2011

The Ministry of Health (MOH) is closely monitoring the current situation of hand foot and mouth disease (HFMD) in Vietnam. Since 1 Jan 2011 to 4 Sep 2011, 98 deaths and 42 673 cases of HFMD have been confirmed across the country. Three quarters of the deaths have been in children aged 3 years or less.

Advice for Travellers

HFMD is a common viral illness which spreads rapidly among children in particular; outbreaks most often occur in children's nurseries and daycare centres. Transmission is via direct contact with nose and throat secretions and faeces if an infected individual and by aerosol droplet spread. Contact with infected children should be limited and crowded situations avoided; personal hygiene and handwashing is paramount in reducing transmission of the virus.
